Tennis Ladder Tournment

So what’s a tennis ladder tournament?  Tennis Clubs in Paphos don’t generally organise these.  It’s something very common in the UK. It’s a great, fun way to meet other people and have the opportunity to pitch your skills against others.  You can see yourself progressing up the ladder and if you lose a match, it doesn’t matter, you can challenge someone else and then take on the other person again when you’re ready.

Sounds interesting?

OK.  So, in a tennis ladder competition, first of all, players are randomnly placed on the steps/rungs of a ladder with number one being the top and say number 10 the bottom.  Players challenge one another to a match.  In this competition, you can challenge someone up to 3 places above you. If a player wins he either stays the same (if he’s the higher ranked player) or takes the losing players place (if the loser was above him/her) loses, the player moves up or down in position on the ladder.  You can play as often or as little as you like, but you can’t challenge the same player until you have played someone else in between.

When does it start and how long does it last?

Our ladder competition is starting now and will last until 1st March 2017.  This will give you enough time to play as many matches as you like and to end with a fairly accurate ranking on the ladder.

Where and when does it take place?

There is no set location for this.  It is up to you to arrange the matches between you and your opponent where and when suits you both. After a challenge is issued, you have two weeks to play.

How do I find the ladder, see who to play & arrange a match?

Either follow the links for the individual ladders or go to and search for the Paphos Tennis Community.  Register, join the community and sign up for the correct ladders.  You can also download the Playwaze app to allow you to message your opponent and enter results from your mobile.

Once you are entered into the ladder tournament, you can look at the ladder and see who is up to 3 places above you.  Choose who you which to challenge and send them a message through Playwaze, or ask me for their phone number (Sacha 99 329107).

How much does it cost to enter?

It costs only 10 euros to enter and this allows you to enter up to two categories.

Is it doubles or singles?

At the moment there is just singles, but if there are enough requests for doubles then we will add doubles competitions.

Sign up now for our Summer Tennis Academy

Whether your children are complete beginners, or advanced tennis players, please read on 🙂

iPAD OR EXERCISE?  That’s usually the dilemma with children.  Trying to get some of them away from their iPad or computer is almost impossible, but we all know (apart from our children) that exercise is good for us.

So, what do you do?  Do you leave them to sit in front of the computer for hours on end, or do you get them out into the fresh air?

Throughout July, we have our SUMMER TENNIS ACADEMY, which could suit your child.  It’s a great, fun sport and it is also a mental game.  So, someone who likes chess, for example, will love tennis.  So too will someone who just loves sport.  In fact tennis is for everyone, you just need the person to teach it to you in the right way ;).

Who wants to join our Summer Tennis Academy?

Who wants to join our Summer Tennis Academy?

Our Summer Tennis Academy will teach all aspects of the game from tactical, technical, mental, physical and match play.  It helps improve concentration, co-ordination, balance, fitness, self-reliance, team work and many other great things. At the same time we try to make it fun.  We want to foster a love of tennis to last throughout a lifetime.

Now, the devil is in  the details ;), so here you go.

There will be some variations due to the number of children signing up for each class, skill levels, locations etc, but the plan is:

Classes will take place at the Coral Beach Hotel or the Venus Beach Hotel, according to overall demand and schedule constraints.  Lessons will be 6-8pm, Monday to Friday, although morning slots from 8-10am may be available if there is sufficient demand for these times.

For children from 6-8 yrs old (roughly) who are using the red balls:

1 hour, twice a week   –  Euros 17 a week, Euros 60 for July

For children from 8-18 years old (roughly) who are using orange, green & maybe yellow balls:

2 hours, three times a week – Euros 50 a week, Euros 170 for July

This includes matchplay practice as well.  We usually organise a tournament at the end for everyone. This is great fun and we like to get the parents there to watch.

So, what do you think?  Will your children have fun? Do you want them to learn a really amazing sport?

Either call me on 99 329107, email me at, or click here to go to the online signup form.

See you in July!!!!

It’s great when you see students making amazing progress!

I love Tennis Coaching in Paphos.  I have a small group who have only just started playing tennis and I’m really happy with the progress they have made.  They are 8-10 years old, but we have started on the red balls.  Why?  So that they can serve, rally and score from the first lesson and learn tactics and technique hand-in-hand.  It’s not just down to the training of course – they’re also excellent pupils.

In fact today was their 7th lesson.  Thanks to the amazing training I did last year with the ITF (International Tennis Federation) they can now rally (forehand & backhand), serve, volley, lob and smash. BUT more importantly, they know that they should wait for the correct ball (a weaker, short ball) to change the direction of the ball at the baseline and that they can then decide to approach the net.  They also know how to play against the player at the net by hitting passing shots or lobbing.

They have an idea of the scoring and just love to play tennis!  What more can you ask!!! Thanks guys!!!

Tennis is good for your eyesight!

Sorry it’s been a while since my last post.  It’s been busy!!!! 🙂 Paphos tennis Coaching takes up a lot of time.

So, what’s this about eyesight?  I’d never really thought about it, but one of my parents came to me to tell me how happy she was that tennis had helped her child’s eyesight.  Apparently in just 4-5 months of tennis her eyesight improved significantly.  Some of this was down to the exercises she did, but according to the optician if he compared it to others with the same condition doing the same exercises, tennis accounted for an extra 20% improvement in her eyesight. Wow!!!

Why was this? Well as a beginner, we did loads of exercises to improve hand to eye co-ordination for both the right and left hand and then having to focus on the ball to be able to hit it helped more.  She can now play tennis and has a great time.  You can’t say fairer than that.

So, if you know children who have a lazy eye, or maybe other conditions, then just maybe tennis could help along with the exercises given by the optician.  I’ve always believed that anyone can play tennis and this is just one example.

See you on court!!!

Speed not power!

Almost anyone you ask who plays tennis will say they try to hit with power, but in my Tennis Lessons in Paphos, I try to change this perception.

Why? If you listen to tennis commentators, you often hear them talking about players tightening up, especially on the big points.  Think about it.  What’s happening?  They get stressed, they hold the racquet tighter and they try to force the shot.  So, what happens to the flow and shape of the stroke?  It changes. The relaxed, consistent stroke disappears, there’s less spin and bam! The shot goes out or in the net.  This is exactly what happens when you try to add more “power” to a shot and to “muscle” it.  You straighten your arm, grip the racquet tighter and lose the shape of your stroke.

So what can you do?  Change your mindset.  When you want to add power, what do you want the ball to do?  Come on, think for a sec.  Yup.  Make the ball go faster.  So, if you want the ball to go faster, what does it make sense to do?  Make the racquet go faster – accelerate the racquet head speed.

So next time you want to add power to the ball, just think that you want to add speed.  Power can come from the legs.

Let me know how it works for you!

2015 Here we go!

Happy New Year from your local Paphos Tennis Coach!  Hope it brings you everything you wish!2015

This year has started out washing away all of last year, with record rainfall.  So, everything is new and fresh.  That hasn’t stopped our tennis though.  We have been doing most of our lessons indoors out of the cold and rain.  Brrrr!!

Last year I did the Spanish Coaching exams to add to my skillset and qualifications and I will be looking to add to that in 2015.  This year, I will be improving and adding to the lessons.  Some of this is already underway and  I hope you will love it.  Any feedback from you is always welcome so that I can continue to make your experience even better.  Onwards and upwards!

I aslo want to say a big thank you to all my pupils who have worked so hard this year and made huge progress.  Well done!

Please keep your eyes out for more announcements on this site and the Facebook page.
